This is from a final paper a senior at Washington University in St. Louis wrote for my Using Everyday Technology course:

Another huge problem with the Android market is its inconsistency. I am a Google nut, so I wanted Android. My backflip was on Android, but Motorola forced the phone to use yahoo instead of google for instant search. That is one huge problem you have with Android. Google isn’t in full control; a lot of it is left up to stubborn phone companies.

Also, when Google updates Android you are left at the mercy of the phone company to know when or even if you will get the update. I had to wait almost nine months to update to the most recent android system. By the time I was finally able to update my phone, Google released a newer operating system. This time Motorola decided not to make it available for backflips. Since Apple controls both the hardware and the software, I won’t have to worry about this anymore.

Needless to say, he’s switched to an iPhone 4S.
